Oxford: smoking in Capitol keeps citizens from attending American Cancer Society Lobby Day

I think many of you are aware that three more ADA complaints have been filed about smoking at the Capitol Building. (GASP's release attached.) It is very sad to me that Don and Kay Young cannot attend the upcoming American Cancer Society Lobby Day because we still allow smoking in legislators' offices. Don and Kay copied me on their e-mail (below) to Tim Freeman from ACS, letting him know that they cannot attend. How can we continue to deny access to the Capitol to many in order to protect a practice that is dangerous to the health of everyone that shares the Capitol as a workplace or visits?

Hi Tim,

Don and I will not be attending the ACS Lobby Day. In fact, we probably will not enter the Capitol until it is smoke-free. We did not have a good experience last year. We met with Senator Dempsey outside the Senate floor and when we enter back into the hall, cigarette smoke was very noticeable. We traced it to Senator Victor Callahan's office. We were told we could voice our complaint at the Commissioner's office. We spoke with Donna Lacy, Executive Assistant, at the Commissioner's office and she said someone would contact us. No one did.

We have been attending the Cancer Society Lobby Day for many years to push for the welfare of the citizens of Missouri, and we are saddened by our legislatures’ lack of concern for our health and wellbeing. The very issues we have been tirelessly fighting for exist overwhelmingly in the Capitol, with no regard for other’s discomfort. How the issue of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke is not recognized as a major health concern is incomprehensible to us.

We hope Lobby Day goes well and thanks for all that you do!
